Tumbulgum's name comes from the Bundjalung language and is thought to mean 'meeting of the waters', which suits a village at the confluence of the Tweed and Rous rivers. In the 1880s it was the main town in the Tweed Valley, with a bank and a river port, until the railway and the Murwillumbah Bridge shifted the centre of the valley to Murwillumbah. About 450 people lived here at the 2021 Census.
